About the Doctor
Dr. Balu Mahendra K. is one of very few surgical oncologists in Madurai with M.Ch. training from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai — India's premier and most respected cancer centre. His advanced training in both laparoscopic and robotic surgical oncology means patients at Kaleidos+ have access to minimally invasive cancer surgery that reduces recovery time and surgical trauma.
He completed his M.B.B.S. at Thanjavur Medical College and his M.S. in General Surgery at Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, before his M.Ch. in Surgical Oncology at Tata Memorial Centre, Mumbai — the institution that cares for the largest number of cancer patients in the country.
A cancer diagnosis sets a devastating tone for the patient and their family, and many still consider it the end of the road. Detected early, cancer usually needs less treatment and offers far better long-term survival than late diagnosis, which is why he places particular emphasis on prevention, awareness and early detection.
He has vast experience in complex oral cavity resections, laryngo-pharyngeal tumours, thyroid and parotid surgery, gastro-intestinal malignancies, retro-peritoneal tumours and uro-gynaecological cancers. His interest in rectal cancer has led to presentations and publications in reputed international forums and journals, and his individualised approach to each patient has delivered survival outcomes matching international standards.
His particular interests include conservative breast surgery — especially in young women with breast cancer — sphincter-preserving surgery for colorectal cancers, pelvic exenteration for locally advanced rectal cancers, and cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intra-peritoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for peritoneal malignancies.
Dr. Balu Mahendra K. is known among his patients for his patient-first approach — calm, caring and compassionate, taking time to explain the cancer journey, available options, and likely outcomes in language families can understand. For patients facing a new cancer diagnosis, this clarity is invaluable.
